“We’re all pretty bizarre, some of us are better at hiding it, that’s all.”
So who guessed the movie quote right off the bat? More than likely you either knew the quote right away or you have no idea what I am talking about. If you know—then shout out to my Gen X peeps. Whether you do or you don’t, buckle up.
The quote I referenced is from an 80’s movie titled, “The Breakfast Club”. The movie is about 5 high school students from different walks of life who happen to end up in Saturday detention together. Over the course of the day, they break down the social barriers that separate them and reveal their issues, fears & feelings.
Sounds a lot like…well…church.
One day a week (typically Sunday), churches open their doors and people from different walks of life gather together. It’s not detention by any means but it’s a time of breaking down barriers of fear, isolation and where God often reveals (and even heals) our “issues”. And it’s all centered around one thing we all have in common: Jesus.
I can’t think of anything weirder than church personally. Not many other places in life take up several hours of our weekend and throw us together with people we might not otherwise socialize with or even cross paths with.
Yet for some reason, God ordained it. Right before Jesus predicts His death He tells Peter—”On this rock, I will build My church.” We know that the church was destined for greatness even then. With Jesus as our chief cornerstone and He alone, the builder.
I love church. If you have known me for more than 5 minutes, then you know I will preach this til the grave. There is not a single thing I am more passionate about. Because the church saved my life.
I found Jesus. The Author and Finisher of my faith.
